"Bad hair day. No explanation needed–everyone has them. But never fear, help is right around the corner–the corner of 15th Street and Eighth Avenue, to be exact. Where PANYC hair salon is located.
Owners J.C., Marylou and Paul have created a calm, relaxing environment that caters to those of us who could use a little scalp help.
Although this hip place has only been open since October ("05), the trio has had a long history together. Texas natives, they worked for the same chain of salons in the Lonestar state, Paul and J.C. in San Antonio and Marylou in Houston. “We all outgrew Texas right about the same time and decided to move to New York almost seven years ago,” says J.C., a bona-fide hottie who once graced the cover of HX.
Though the team’s first salon was in the East Village, they moved to Chelsea “because we dumped our investors and decided to open our own salon,” he says. “This location just fell into our laps at the right time. We found it by walking around the neighborhood.”
As did i. After passing PANYC a few times while hauling my laundry to a nearby washy-washy hole, I decided to pop in and check it out. I was on the rebound from my last stylist and looking for something different, so before the cutting began, J.C. sat me down, listened to what I wanted and then shared his vision with me.
Winning my trust, he earned full(ish) creative freedom and in return, J.C. gave me a funky new layered cut. When the chair swiveled around, I couldn’t have been happier–my hair was fit for a queen. Since then I’ve received many compliments on my new ‘do and, in perhaps the ultimate test, even my mother, who usually uses my hair as fodder when throwing shade in my direction, had only positive things to say.

"Have a last-minute date and your hair looks like it got caught in the paper shredder?
Don't panic-go to Panyc. This laidback favorite-now in a new location-combines top-notch cutting skills with reasonable prices and a comfortable vibe that's hard to come by in this hip neighborhood.
Open Tuesday through Saturday, Panyc offers just cutting and coloring services, but that's more than enough to leave you feeling glam. Returning customers are treated better than those one-cut stands: Haircuts are $75 for your first visit and then $65 after that (or make an appointment with a junior stylist for $45).
In need of some color? Same deal: Get a half-head of highlights for $150 the first time you come in and then for $125 the rest of the time, or get a single-process job done for $75 and for $60 on each follow-up visit.
At last-get rewarded for being a repeat customer."
