At 10-years-old, Paul Andrew’s hairstyling inspiration sprung from his aunt’s small town shop, The Idealistic Salon, in Texas.
“I swept up hair while my mom and my grandma were getting their hair done,” said Andrew.
But after Andrew’s childhood exposure, he, along with his colleagues, has been recognized nationally for cuts, colors and styles.
The work emanating from the PANYC Salon, at 258 W. 15th St. in Chelsea, has been featured on Inside Edition, as well as in GQ magazine and other media outlets.
“All I needed was some wings,” said Andrew, referring to his paltry haircutting introduction.
After attending a trade school for two years in his hometown of San Antonio, Andrews received his license in 1985.
Following certification, Andrews worked for an elite group of high-end "salons de beaute" in Texas, where he was introduced to advanced-training courses.
Soon, Andrew became a teacher, qualifying others to work in the boutique-style salons.
“Training can take anywhere from six months to two years,” he said.

“That’s where I met J.C.,” he added.
After being introduced to co-owners J.C. Munguia and Marylou Vasquez at a regional conference, Andrew and Munguia moved to New York in 1998.
“I worked for a second ‘intercoiffier’ company in Soho for three years,” said Andrew.
He and his colleagues have been trained by Sexy Hair Concepts as well as schooled in the Michael O’Rourke technique, an advanced level of hair cutting.
"Pymetrics" is yet another high-end technique the owners have mastered.
But, soon after Andrew, Mungia and Vasquez paid their dues at a Soho salon, they opened their own house of beauty in the East Village in 2001.
And after three years, the trio moved west and opened up shop in Chelsea.
Since then, their work has been lauded on the Travel Channel in 2002 and Inside Edition in 2005, as well as in GQ magazine and Genre of the same year.
Andrew’s clients include women and men, from New York University students to film actors, including Elizabeth Reagan, who was featured in the “Whoopi Goldberg Show.”
On his own, Andrew coifs hair on a freelance basis for wedding clients.
In preparing bridal locks, Andrews has traveled to Utah, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Louisiana.
In 2005, Andrew teamed up with Adrian Jones of Choice Models in New York, styling models’ hair for composition cards.
All three owners, including hairstylist, Christopher Miller, took part in the Fashion Week 2005, working with Abby Z., a plus women’s designer.

But, for Andrew with down-home roots, his vision remains down-to-earth.
“I want to continue to teach and bring back the real passion of the industry,” said Andrews.
